OUR HISTORY

hotel

1804

the foundation

This is the year that sees the construction of the first walls, then the boundaries, of the Hotel de la Poste, and that makes it the oldest hotel of the Queen of the Dolomites.

under construction

1809

In 1809, Silvestro Manaigo, as stated in his will, built a three-storey house. At that time the part open to the public was a simple Osteria, a room inside the private house with a few small tables and an enclosure embedded in the wall where mugs, glasses, wine and liqueurs were kept. There was no external sign to indicate the activity because the people indicated it by name "Osteria da Silvestro" or later "Osteria da Mansueto" when it passed to his son.
Mansueto (1802-1878) and the brothers Pietro (1802-1868) and Celestino (1797-1864) lived the magical period of the birth of tourism in Cortina.

The house of the Manaigos was large and was well suited to welcome the first foreigners who arrived in diligence, especially from Dobbiaco after a journey of at least four hours.

The three brothers were true entrepreneurs: Celestino dealt with the postal messengers, and traded timber with the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom, Mansueto managed the tavern / inn and together with his brother Pietro they held a hardware and food store. Everything happened in the same house that has always been the focal point of the town.

between the two wars

Between the wars, tourism gradually gained strength: cultural and sporting events brought the big names of the international jet-set to the hotels, princes, nobles, ministers, industrialists, as well as writers and artists. But the historical events that led to the Second World War interrupted the spell, Cortina became a hospital area and the hotels were requisitioned.

At the "Post" the German command was installed to make it headquarters, the activity resumed only with the arrival of the English allies who settled in the same rooms that until recently were occupied by German fugitives.

handover

1946

Gottardo missed in 1946 leaving the inn in the hands of his son Renato, who returned from the war when he was only twenty, after a brief stay of hotellerie studies in Switzerland, gave new impetus to the Hotel. First of all it was decided to change the German appearance by adhering to the taste of the more linear and fresh era. The name was also changed to "Hôtel de le Poste", but for everyone it has always been the "Post".

In 1950, and for several seasons, the Post had the honor of hosting the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, a former visitor to Cortina who, in room 107, with the typewriter still jealously preserved, finished the book "Beyond the river and among the trees ".

1950

WINTER OLYMPICS

It was in those years that the hotel underwent a new structural development: Renato and his sister Marisa, taking advantage of the need for spaces to be used as offices for the 1956 Winter Olympics, demolished the old remittances of the stagecoaches by building a new wing that they rented to the Olympic Committee .

Later the work continued by redoing the dining room, now the Dolomieu Salone, and building the sun terrace, which took the place of the tower.

With enthusiastic spirit Renato organized many events for his guests, such as picnics in the woods and the Polo on Ice also followed by his son Gottardo.

1956

today

Currently the management has passed into the hands of the youngest son Gherardo, who with his cousin Michela continues the glorious family tradition; they are responsible for other renovations, such as the opening of the Posticino Restaurant, the Cigar Room and lastly the brand new Yellow Lounge where great-grandfather Max moved the post office at the beginning of the last century.

From 1804 to today, as in a relay race, the baton has continuously passed into the hands of seven generations. For more than two centuries the Manaigo family has made the reception a mission, always in the same house, that of Sylvester, built on the ruins of the Church of St. Catherine, in front of the Parish Church.
